Located in the Sydney Central Business District, Wynard Station, which was put into operation in 1932, is an important historical site in Sydney and one of the busiest stations. Today, it still welcomes tens of thousands of commuters every day.
Last year, the Department of Transport of Australia signed a hundreds of millions of dollars in the city's old station renovation plan, Wynyard station is also among them, it ushered in the largest renovation since the station was built.
Last week, the refurbished Wynyard station was unveiled. For safety reasons, the four wooden escalators that had been in operation since 1932 were demolished and replaced by Australian artist Chris Fox, who is good at breaking the boundaries of concepts and materials and fusing artistic and architectural techniques to create. Special installation on the ceiling-Interloop.
Chris Fox spent six months entwining the 244 steps of these four rows of escalators. They were 50 meters long and weighed about 5 tons. It took 48 hours to complete the installation.
Now, they are installed on the ceiling above the York Street elevator entrance, and pedestrians who come and go can see this huge device that looks like a Moebius ring or an accordion as soon as they look up. The traces of the old elevator itself, as well as the photo-style graffiti showing the original appearance of the station above the new elevator, also remind people of the history of Wynyard Station for more than 80 years.
In Chris Fox's view, Interloop is a new interpretation of the historic wooden escalator. It has the power to "connect yesterday and tomorrow".
In fact, the escalator at Wynyard Station is one of the few wooden elevators in operation to this day. However, after a fire broke out at King's Cross Station in London in 1987, this aging wooden escalator has slowly fallen out of favor due to the potential danger. Although its surface is made of flame-retardant materials, it still creates a lot of trouble for commuters. The most common is that high-heeled shoes are stuck in the gaps of the escalator pedals. These gaps are also easy to pinch pets. paw.
Sydney's growing capacity is also the main reason for the replacement of wooden elevators. After the renovation of Wynyard Station is completed, it has a larger lobby, more advanced ventilation equipment and more ticket gates.
The Transport for NSW, which commissioned Chris Fox to design the Interloop, expressed great satisfaction with the transformation. The agency’s general coordinator Marg Prendergast said, “It is important that people realize that this iconic wooden escalator has become a heritage.”
